Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Borhom Saleh said on Thursday negotiations between his government and the United States on the controversial long-term security agreement were going "very well." "The two sides are trying to reach a draft that serves their mutual interests and ensures Iraq's sovereignty," Saleh said in an interview with Iraqia TV channel.
"The current talks focus on the immunity of U.S. military and civilian personnel," he disclosed.
"We do our best to protect the sovereignty of our country," he said, noting that Iraq needed more time to rebuild its security forces.
"We need the U.S. military support for some time but the presence of U.S. forces in Iraq should be within the framework of a clear-cut deal," Saleh asserted.
"The talks are going very well and we have reached important understandings especially in the economic and cultural areas such as the necessary U.S. support for Iraq to join the World Trade Organization (WTO)," he added.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi senior official declined to specify an ultimatum for the talks, saying: "There is no time limit for the talks" which were expected to complete in late July.
